My father would always give me knives as a boy, and I first began carrying knives in my back pocket when I was ten years old. Till today, as long as I can carry one hassle-free my preference is to always carry a bladed weapon with me.
For self-defense purposes and utility there is nothing more basic to human survival than a knife. In fact, archaeo-anthropologists sometimes make the distinction whether the previous inhabitants of an archeological site were Homo Sapiens as opposed to our less fortunate humanoid cousin species is based on the types of stone bladed tools they used, as opposed to crude sharp chipped rocks.
